A small practice, not a factory.
Atelier North is three people. A designer, an engineer, a writer. We work in a single room above a print shop on Skolavordustigur. We accept five projects a year. We turn down the rest.
Our clients are architects, galleries, fashion houses, wineries, and the rare brand that keeps a calendar instead of a feed. We ship sites that load in under a second, hold up in a decade, and read the way a good catalogue reads — line by line, spread by spread, with respect for the reader's time.
We don't sell websites. We sell the discipline that produces them.
We charge between €25,000 and €150,000 per site. We do not do retainers, social campaigns, performance marketing, or pitch decks. We answer email between 9 and 5, GMT, weekdays. The rest of the day belongs to the work.
Six rules we keep on paper.
We don't follow trends because trends end. Every six months, the field redraws itself. We have watched neumorphism, glassmorphism, brutalism, and y2k arrive and exit. The clients who chased each one are still paying to redo the previous one. We work in serif and rule and grid, because they were old when we got here, and they will be old when we leave.
We work in cold-set serif because it has weight. A page set in Fraunces or Garamond does the work that a hundred CSS animations cannot. Type carries authority. Sans-serif speaks softly; serif speaks once. We choose the form that does not need to be repeated.
We answer email between 9 and 5 because boundaries make work. Availability is not a service. The studios that answer at midnight produce work that reads like midnight. Our clients have learned to wait until morning, and the work is better for it. So is the studio.
We turn down five projects for every one we accept. We say no to anything we cannot defend on a wall in five years. Crypto, gambling, pseudo-spiritual wellness, fast-fashion drops, white-label SaaS. Refusal is the first design decision. Every yes that follows is shaped by it.
Three of us. No SaaS. No accounts team. We are not scaling. We are not raising. We are not hiring a strategist. The studio is sized to its output and not the other way around. If you would like a forty-person agency, we know the names of three good ones. We will write them down for you.
If your site doesn't outlast you, we built it wrong. A practice site, a gallery site, a winery site — these are documents of an intention. They should still read in 2040 the way a well-set book from 1965 still reads. That is the standard. Anything below it is a draft.
Begin a project, in writing.
We accept new clients twice a year. The next intake closes on 30 June. Send a short letter; we read everything we receive.
